{"id":13408,"date":"2026-04-30T16:42:36","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T16:42:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/russia\/13408\/"},"modified":"2026-04-30T16:42:36","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T16:42:36","slug":"zelensky-seeks-clarity-from-u-s-on-russias-short-term-ceasefire-proposal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/russia\/13408\/","title":{"rendered":"Zelensky seeks clarity from U.S. on Russia\u2019s short-term ceasefire proposal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/55IXAACIDZA6DGXWCR5GPAV2GQ.JPG?auth=e5780000beab6d323650042b5be28ceac8eee68d0e4e502e314f49e2a201c181&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">A resident walks at the site of a Russian drone strike, in Dnipro, Ukraine, Thursday.Stringer\/Reuters<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is seeking details of a short-term ceasefire Russia proposed to U.S. President Donald Trump, he said in a post on Telegram on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a May 9 ceasefire to coincide with Victory Day in Russia in a phone call with Trump the previous day, according to the Kremlin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWe have instructed our representatives to contact the United States president\u2019s team and clarify the details of the Russian proposal for a short-term ceasefire,\u201d Zelensky said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Meanwhile, Russian attacks overnight killed one person in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro and wounded dozens more in the southern port city of Odesa, as Ukraine continued to strike industrial facilities inside Russian territory for a second day in a row.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">A ship that created a brief diplomatic scuffle between Israel and Ukraine has departed Israel without unloading what Zelensky said were grains Russia stole from occupied areas of Ukraine, Ukrainian officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Potential short-term ceasefire<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Putin\u2019s aide Yuri Ushakov said that the Russian president had discussed a ceasefire for the May 9 holiday, when Russia celebrates victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, during a phone call with Trump Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">But Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Thursday that no definite decision had been made, and that it would be for Putin to decide on the specific terms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cFor now, no concrete decision has been made,\u201d Peskov said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Zelensky said that Ukraine is proposing a longer-term ceasefire. \u201cWe will find out exactly what is being discussed, whether it\u2019s a few hours of security for a parade in Moscow or something more,\u201d he said in a post on Telegram.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/ULIE5EISG5DD3GNMJIFWCDV2SY.JPG?auth=f55db68ec7b88defb72804c0e0647397fc157af421b08414a8668664eb18e0d6&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">A sapper demines an agricultural field in Balakliia, Kharkiv region, Ukraine, Thursday.Andrii Marienko\/The Associated Press<\/p>\n<p>Controversial ship does not unload<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The ship that Ukrainian officials said was carrying stolen grain had anchored close to the Haifa port for several days, but departed from Israel on Thursday morning, according to MarineTraffic.com, which tracks ships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Israel Grain Importers Association said that the country\u2019s largest grain import company rejected the shipment, due to the sensitive situation with Ukraine, Israeli media reported. \u201cThe Russian supplier of the wheat cargo will be forced to find another destination to unload the cargo,\u201d the association said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Ukraine\u2019s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the development was welcome.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThis demonstrates that Ukraine\u2019s legal and diplomatic actions have been effective,\u201d he said in a post on X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had threatened sanctions against Israel on Tuesday if the vessel unloaded. Israel\u2019s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said earlier in the week that the country\u2019s tax authority had opened an investigation into the ship.<\/p>\n<p>Russian attacks continue in Ukraine<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Dnipro, a drone attack killed one person and injured five, Dnipropetrovsk regional head Oleksandr Hanzha said in a post on Telegram. He said a shop, a residential building and vehicles were damaged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Odesa, region head Oleh Kiper said Russian forces launched waves of drone attacks on residential buildings and civilian infrastructure in Odesa overnight, wounding 20 people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">He added that Ukrainian air defences had downed many of the incoming targets but hits and falling debris damaged residential buildings, a hotel, a kindergarten and an administrative building. Dmitry Makhonin said an industrial facility was hit, and there were no casualties or any significant damage.
