Alexander Nesterovich, the company\u2019s CEO, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interfax.ru\/amp\/1087124\" title=\"said\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> Thursday that the accident was likely caused by the thawing of a \u201clens\u201d \u2014 a localized underground pocket of ice or unstable rock.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\">According to the Interfax news agency, the disaster unfolded in two stages. An initial rockslide buried a piece of heavy machinery and its driver. However, authorities estimate that the total volume of the collapse reached approximately 80,000 cubic meters (2.8 million cubic feet).<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">The Investigative Committee,\u00a0Russia\u2019s top investigative body, has <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/su_skr49\/2750\" title=\"launched\" rel=\"nofollow\">launched<\/a> a\u00a0criminal probe into potential safety violations.
