She described this as a tool of pressure on personnel and an example of the decline of what she called \u201cthe much-vaunted American democracy.\u201d According to her, this practice has been used since 2023. She did not specify how many children have been affected.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe State Department, or those behind the fa\u00e7ade of American diplomacy, have begun to extend US citizenship to children of employees of Russian consulates born within US jurisdiction\u2014literally by force\u2014under the pretext of the constitutionally enshrined \u2018right of the soil\u2019 and the allegedly limited nature of consular immunity,\u201d Zakharova wrote in a column for <a style=\"color: rgb(53, 152, 219);\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vedomosti.ru\/opinion\/columns\/2026\/05\/04\/1194816-spasibo-ne-nado-dostatochno-prekratite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Vedomosti<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The spokesperson stressed that the actions of US officials contradict both international law and US domestic law. She argued that diplomats are not fully subject to the jurisdiction of the host country, and therefore, birthright citizenship does not automatically apply to their children.
