Russia just hit Ukraine with over 1,500 drones and missiles<\/a> within 24 hours.<\/p>\n

In the largest attack of the war, over 700 drones<\/a> first targeted Western Ukraine and prompted Budapest to summon the Russian ambassador<\/a>. Then overnight, more drones and missiles targeted Kyiv<\/a> and \u2013 despite Kyiv downing over 90% of incoming drones \u2013 damaged 180 sites<\/a> and sent a residential building crumbling to the ground<\/a> in the capital, with the fates of more than a dozen people still unknown as they remain buried<\/a> beneath the rubble.<\/p>\n

President Volodymyr Zelensky has vowed a response<\/a>, while Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russia chose \u201cterror\u201d<\/a> over peace. French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz both condemned the strike<\/a>, saying it does not reflect a sincere willingness to negotiate from Moscow\u2019s side.<\/p>\n

Peace talks or not, Russia is bracing for a prolonged conflict.<\/p>\n

In terms of manpower, Russia\u2019s prison population reportedly dropped by 180,000<\/a> after the 2022 invasion began, as Moscow sought to replenish its ranks by enlisting prisoners.<\/p>\n

Moscow has also been eyeing alternatives for Starlink after it was cut off from the US satellite service a few months prior. While there has been little progress, Ukraine\u2019s drone force chief has warned that Russia might come up with usable replacements within a year<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But despite some progress in defense tech, overall business in Ukraine remains difficult, as the business recovery index turns negative<\/a> for the first time since 2023 amid collapsing order portfolios.<\/p>\n

World updates \u2013 potential new aid from Washington, Trump in China, Latvia minister resigns <\/p>\n

Overnight, a bipartisan coalition of US House members secured the required 218 signatures on a discharge petition to force a floor vote on the Ukraine Support Act<\/a>, which would provide more than $1 billion in assistance to Kyiv and authorize up to $8 billion in direct loans if passed.<\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump\u2019s meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping is also unfolding \u2013 the two talked about<\/a> the Iran war, Ukraine and economic cooperation.<\/p>\n

But the versions of events also differ slightly from Washington and Beijing \u2013 Chinese state media said the two discussed Taiwan<\/a>, with Beijing telling Washington that backing the island could lead to collisions, but Washington made no mention of that in subsequent readouts.<\/p>\n

And in Europe, the Pentagon reportedly canceled deployment plans<\/a> of 4,000 troops to Poland at the last minute. Meanwhile, the war in Ukraine also spilled over in some peculiar ways \u2013 days after Latvia\u2019s defense minister resigned<\/a> following stray drones crashing in the country, the prime minister also resigned<\/a> amid political pressure from the coalition over the defense minister\u2019s departure.<\/p>\n
