{"id":19452,"date":"2026-05-16T05:54:21","date_gmt":"2026-05-16T05:54:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/russia\/19452\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T05:54:21","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T05:54:21","slug":"putin-signs-decree-simplifying-russian-citizenship-process-for-transnistria-residents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/russia\/19452\/","title":{"rendered":"Putin signs decree simplifying Russian citizenship process for Transnistria residents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree simplifying the citizenship process for residents of Moldova&#8217;s Russian-occupied Transnistria.<\/p>\n<p>Eligible applicants can skip Russian residency requirements, history and civic tests, and can forego proving proficiency in the Russian language.<\/p>\n<p>Russian proxies that have controlled the territory since the 1990&#8217;s rely heavily on Moscow&#8217;s support and have <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/transnistria-appeals-to-russia-to-help-end-economic-blockade\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">appealed<\/a> to Russia for assistance in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Moscow has long used passportization mechanisms to exert influence over populations in occupied territories and regions controlled by Russian proxies.<\/p>\n<p>Putin has issued similar decrees in the past. In May 2025, \u00a0Moscow <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/putin-signs-decree-easing-russian-citizenship-process-for-residents-of-abkhazia-south-ossetia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">simplified<\/a> the process to obtain <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/russian-citizenship\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Russian citizenship<\/a> for residents of Georgia&#8217;s Russian-occupied territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Article image\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;object-fit:cover\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/russia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1778910861_832_image.png\"\/>The map of Moldova and Russian-occupied Transnistria. (Lisa Kukharska\/The Kyiv Independent)<\/p>\n<p>On March 4, Putin signed a decree that <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/russia-makes-simplified-passportization-process-in-occupied-territories-indefinite-signaling-consolidation-of-russian-occupation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">indefinitely extends<\/a> a simplified procedure for obtaining Russian citizenship in Ukraine&#8217;s occupied territories.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The goal of the new decree is to passportize as many people as possible, pressuring them,&#8221; Nataliia Yurlova, lawyer for non-governmental organization Donbas SOS, told the Kyiv Independent.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, occupation authorities force parents in occupied Kherson Oblast to obtain <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/they-are-instruments-of-terror-parents-in-occupied-kherson-oblast-who-refuse-russian-passports-threatened-with-losing-parental-rights\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Russian passports<\/a> or risk losing parental rights, the Center of National Resistance reported on July 30.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree simplifying the citizenship process for residents of Moldova&#8217;s Russian-occupied Transnistria.
