Next year, France, Italy, Spain and Poland are expected to hold elections.<\/p>\n<p>French authorities say they detected low-level Russian-backed disinformation campaigns ahead of municipal elections in March. They have warned of a high risk of interference in next year\u2019s presidential election. Disinformation campaigns and other hybrid war operations are likely to favor populist movements, including the top-polling far-right National Rally, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/france-far-right-faces-internal-split-over-russia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has historically been friendly to Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a document shared with EU officials shortly after last year&#8217;s Moldovan parliamentary election and seen by POLITICO, the government argued that the path to joining the EU was narrow.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/russia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/GettyImages-2257879301-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8224799\"  \/>Moldovan President Maia Sandu speaks at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France on Jan. 27, 2026. | Mustafa Yalcin\/Anadolu via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The victory by pro-European parties last year offered &#8220;a window of opportunity,\u201d the document read. &#8220;However, failure to exploit it and consolidate the win &#8230; may result in a massive shift towards populists which would favor Russia&#8217;s interests. In turn, it will have far-reaching security consequences for the region.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sandu has been touring EU capitals to make the case why the bloc should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-ukraine-moldova-accession-viktor-orban\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">admit her country<\/a>. The EU has linked Chi\u0219in\u0103u\u2019s bid to join with Kyiv\u2019s, and formal negotiations with both are stalled due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/5-steps-ukraine-eu-membership-2027\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">opposition<\/a> from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n to Ukraine\u2019s accession.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/presedinte.md\/eng\/discursuri\/discursul-presedintei-maia-sandu-in-parlamentul-letoniei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">speech to the Latvian parliament<\/a> on Wednesday, Sandu pitched Moldova&#8217;s integration as a matter of &#8220;strategic coherence\u201d \u2014 arguing that leaving countries like hers outside the bloc would be a gift to the Kremlin.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A Europe that is serious about its security must be serious about its Eastern neighborhood,\u201d she said. \u201cIt cannot support Ukraine with one hand while leaving democratic nations in gray zones with the other.
