KYIV\/MOSCOW, April 12 (Reuters) – Russia and Ukraine accused each other L1N40U064 on Sunday of breaching the 32-hour ceasefire L1N40S124 in their four-year war, \u200creporting more than a thousand drone and shelling attacks just hours \u200cafter the truce began on Saturday to mark Orthodox Easter.<\/p>\n
The Russian defence ministry said it recorded \u200b1,971 ceasefire violations overnight into Sunday, while Ukraine’s general staff reported 479 shelling attacks and more than 1,700 drone strikes by Russian troops.<\/p>\n
According to the calendar of the Orthodox faith dominant in both countries, Easter is celebrated this year on Sunday.<\/p>\n
A \u200csoldier from Ukraine’s 65th brigade \u2060fighting in Zaporizhzhia said Russian reconnaissance drones were still circling the area despite the ceasefire, blocking efforts to recover the \u2060bodies of fallen troops.<\/p>\n
“We wanted to evacuate our fallen comrades today, but (the Russians) are not letting us do so just yet,” the soldier, known by the call sign \u200bSpider, said \u200bat a candle-lit military Easter service.<\/p>\n
Russia said \u200ba child was among civilians \u200cinjured in a Ukrainian drone attack on the Kursk region, while the Belgorod region’s governor Vyacheslav Gladkov reported two people killed by Ukrainian shelling.<\/p>\n
Ukraine’s State Emergencies Service said two civilians were wounded on Sunday by a Russian drone attack in Kharkiv region.<\/p>\n
Reuters could not independently verify reports of military activity.<\/p>\n
‘HUMANITARIAN GESTURE’<\/p>\n
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry \u200cPeskov said on Sunday that the truce \u200bwas a “humanitarian gesture” from Russian President Vladimir Putin, \u200bbut that Russian troops would resume \u200bfighting as soon as it ends.<\/p>\n
“Putin has instructed the Russian \u200cmilitary to remain on high alert \u200bin case of provocations,” \u200bPeskov said.<\/p>\n
Putin announced nL1N40S124 the temporary Orthodox Easter ceasefire on April 9, and it is set to end at midnight (2100 GMT) Sunday.<\/p>\n
Ukrainian President Volodymyr \u200bZelenskiy, whose previous ceasefire \u200cproposals were turned down by Moscow, agreed to the truce.<\/p>\n
