\u200cRussia<\/a> and Ukraine<\/a> accused each other on Sunday of breaching the 32-hour ceasefire in their four-year war, \u200creporting more than 1,000 drone and shelling attacks just hours after the truce began on \u200bSaturday to mark Orthodox Easter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Russian defence ministry said it recorded 1,971 ceasefire violations overnight into Sunday, while Ukraine\u2019s general staff reported 479 shelling attacks and more than 1,700 drone strikes by Russian \u200btroops.<\/p>\n

According to the calendar of the Orthodox faith dominant in both countries, Easter is celebrated this \u2060year on April 12th.<\/p>\n

A soldier from Ukraine\u2019s 65th brigade fighting in Zaporizhzhia said \u200cRussian \u200creconnaissance \u200bdrones were still circling the area despite the ceasefire, blocking efforts to recover the bodies of fallen troops.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to \u2060evacuate our fallen comrades \u200btoday, but [the Russians] are not letting us do \u200bso just yet,\u201d the soldier, known by the call sign Spider, said at \u200ca candlelit military Easter service.<\/p>\n

Russia said \u200ba child was among civilians injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on the \u2060Kursk region, while the Belgorod region\u2019s \u2060governor Vyacheslav \u200bGladkov reported two people killed by Ukrainian shelling.<\/p>\n

Ukraine\u2019s state emergencies service said two civilians were wounded on Sunday by a Russian drone attack in Kharkiv region.<\/p>\n

Reuters could not independently verify reports of military activity.<\/p>\n

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday that the truce was a \u201chumanitarian gesture\u201d from Russian president Vladimir Putin<\/a>, but that Russian troops would resume fighting \u200cas soon as it ends.<\/p>\n

\u201cPutin \u2060has instructed the Russian military to remain on high alert in case of provocations,\u201d Peskov said.<\/p>\n

Putin announced the temporary Orthodox Easter \u200cceasefire on April 9th, and it was set to end at midnight (10pm Irish time) on Sunday.<\/p>\n
