Proteiner i denna del av cellen \u00e4r vanligtvis avsedda f\u00f6r sekretion eller f\u00f6r att presenteras p\u00e5 cellens yta; chaperoner och kvalitetskontrollfaktorer i endoplasmatiska n\u00e4tverket hj\u00e4lper till att s\u00e4kerst\u00e4lla att proteinerna bearbetas och veckas korrekt. N\u00e4r systemet \u00f6verbelastas och ovikta proteiner ansamlas, initieras en cellul\u00e4r stressrespons.
