Na stavbe pracuje vy\u0161e 12 000 \u013eud\u00ed, ktor\u00ed okrem kopania kan\u00e1lov a plavebn\u00fdch kom\u00f4r musia stava\u0165 mosty \u010di tunely. Prv\u00fd \u00fasek je dokon\u010den\u00fd v roku 1671, druh\u00e1 vetva o desa\u0165 rokov nesk\u00f4r. Pri tom u\u017e ale Pierre-Paul Riquet ch\u00fdba. Od staroveku predsa kvitne obchod medzi Eur\u00f3pou a \u010ealek\u00fdm v\u00fdchodom a \u00famorn\u00e1 cesta po s\u00fa\u0161i je rovnako nev\u00fdhodn\u00e1, nebezpe\u010dn\u00e1 a drah\u00e1 ako obopl\u00e1vanie Afriky. Zo Stredozemn\u00e9ho do \u010cerven\u00e9ho mora a potom do Indick\u00e9ho oce\u00e1nu je to pritom len k\u00fasok! O v\u00fdstavbu takejto vodnej cesty sa sna\u017eili u\u017e star\u00ed Egyp\u0165ania prepojen\u00edm \u010cerven\u00e9ho mora s deltou N\u00edlu, novodob\u00e9 pokusy sa datuj\u00fa od 16. storo\u010dia. Stavba je zah\u00e1jen\u00e1 25. marca 1859 a vzh\u013eadom na rovnak\u00fa \u00farove\u0148 morsk\u00fdch hlad\u00edn oboch vodn\u00fdch pl\u00f4ch sa zaob\u00edde bez plavebn\u00fdch kom\u00f4r. Pracuje na nej s\u00fa\u010dasne 34 000 robotn\u00edkov, celkom sa ich ale vystrieda vy\u0161e pol druh\u00e9ho mili\u00f3na. O ich z\u00e1sobovanie sa star\u00e1 1800 tiav.
