While one team can only watch what happens this final week, the top five slots in the Foothill League baseball standings are anything but settled. Crucial home-and-aways could lock in current positions or shake them up hard.

West Ranch (13-12, 7-3)

West Ranch had no league games last week, which leaves the Wildcats with a tentative hold on first place with two Foothill contests remaining. But a 1-17 drubbing from non-league Notre Dame (16-7) on April 25 might serve as a wake-up call.

West Ranch’s remaining league games are critical ones, both against #4 Hart, with WR visiting on Wednesday, April 29 and hosting on Friday, May 1, both at 3:30 p.m.

Castaic (17-8, 7-3)

The Castaic Coyotes have had nothing but wins lately, with the last two over league opponent Hart, 7-5 on April 22 and 9-8 on April 24. Thusly, Castaic finds itself leaning toward the finish with the same league record as #1 West Ranch.

Castaic’s last two Foothill games will be against #7 Canyon (winless in league), so upward movement in the standings is quite possible. Castaic will be home on Wednesday, April 29 and away on Friday, May 1, both at 3:30 p.m.

Saugus (12-12, 8-4)

The Saugus Centurions split with Golden Valley last week, winning 7-1 on April 22 and losing 0-3 on April 24. That finishes league play for Saugus at 8-4, which is currently third place, but it could move up, depending on how the last games go for West Ranch and Castaic.

Hart (10-13-1, 5-4-1)

The Hart Hawks lost twice to Castaic last week, 5-7 on April 22 and 8-9 on April 24. This prevents Hart from rising any higher than second place in league. However, the Hawk’s last two league games are against #1 West Ranch, so Hart could play spoiler.

Those games are home on Wednesday, April 29 at 3:30 p.m. and away on Friday, May 1 at 3:30 p.m.

Valencia (10-13-1, 5-4-1)

Valencia took two from Canyon last week, winning 10-0 on April 22 and 3-0 on April 24. The Vikings have an identical league record with Hart, but with better odds at winning in the last two games.

Those games are both against #6 Golden Valley, away on Wednesday, April 29 at 3:30 p.m. and home on Friday, May 1 at 3:30 p.m.

Golden Valley (13-10, 3-7)

The Golden Valley Grizzlies split with Saugus last week, losing 1-7 on April 22 and winning 3-0 on April 24. While this caused Saugus some slippage in standings, GV stayed at sixth place in league and will continue there.

Golden Valley’s last two league games, against #5 Valencia, could change things for other teams, but will be just for pride, otherwise. The Grizzlies are home on Wednesday, April 29 and away on Friday, May 1, both at 3:30 p.m.

Canyon (8-15, 0-10)

The Canyon Cowboys dropped two to Valencia last week, 0-10 on April 22 and 0-3 on April 24.

Canyon’s last two opportunities to get a first league win will be against #2 and surging Castaic, away on Wednesday, April 29 and home on Friday, May 1, both at 3:30 p.m. And so, with performances going against “likely,” the Cowboys could, possibly, finish on a happy note, getting both a league win (or two) and playing spoiler.
