easyJet has issued an alert to passengers travelling to Spain, France and a host of other destinations.
The airline issued an update last month, with more than 100 airports affected. The “important” message, issued on April 1, reminds holidaymakers that queue times may be impacted by new border checks. easyJet said: “Airports across Europe may experience longer waiting times at passport control due to the new European Entry/Exit System (EES). This could mean you need to have your biometrics taken at border checks, including the scanning of facial images and fingerprints.”
Travellers heading to the EU are advised to download the easyJet app for live updates, including when the gate opens. easyJet is also urging these passengers to ensure they have all necessary travel documents and adds that not only may they face longer waiting times on arrival, additional checks will also apply when they depart any EU country.
easyJet said: “Please also allow extra time to make your way through the airport on your return trip”. The travel operator added that the EU is “currently rolling out a mobile app to support pre-registration for EES” and asked passengers to check whether it is “supported for the country you are travelling to/from before downloading”.
The EES covers 29 countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
While Greece is included in the EES, the Greek embassy in London confirmed earlier this week that Brits will be exempt from biometric registration on arrival in Greece for the time being.
