Spain is home to many of Britain’s most beloved holiday destinations, from Benidorm to Majorca and the Canary Islands – yet with enormous tourist numbers, many of us are seeking out quieter alternatives. Frigiliana is a stunning village nestled in the southern region of Spain that could well become a new favourite amongst holidaymakers.
Situated in Malaga, it lies in the foothills of the Sierra Almijara mountain range, not far from the renowned Costa del Sol, and has been named one of the “world’s most beautiful towns” by Travel and Leisure. The village is perhaps best known for its charming white-washed houses adorned with vivid flowers, providing a delightful backdrop for Instagram photographs. Meanwhile, the winding streets and narrow alleyways afford breathtaking views across the Mediterranean Sea, reports Daily Star.

The spectacular natural surroundings make Frigiliana a perfect destination for those who love exploring the great outdoors, with plenty of activities on offer for adventure-seeking Brits.
Visitors can discover scenic trails weaving through pine forests, rugged mountains and picturesque valleys.
The village is also within easy reach of several stunning beaches along the Costa del Sol, including Burriana Beach near Nerva, which boasts a sweeping stretch of golden sand.
Whether you fancy basking in the sunshine, taking a dip in the crystal-clear waters, or trying your hand at water sports, such as snorkelling, kayaking or paddleboarding, there’s something for everyone.
Another outstanding option is Mary beach – considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Spain, it is nestled amongst towering cliffs and boasts strikingly bright turquoise waters, according to visitors.
Nearby Nerja is renowned for its stunning beaches, including the celebrated Balcony of Europe, a promenade offering breathtaking views across the Mediterranean Sea.
History fans will also find plenty to savour in Frigiliana. The remarkably well-preserved historic quarter has been designated a Site of Cultural Interest by the Spanish government.
Visitors can meander through the winding labyrinthine streets, discover the medieval fortress, and marvel at the traditional Andalusian architecture.

Naturally, given its modest size, there is no bustling nightlife to speak of. However, should you be looking for a lively evening out during your holiday, several nearby areas can more than oblige.
Down at the beach, you’ll discover beach bars, known as chiringuitos, where you can enjoy refreshing drinks and snacks while soaking up the views of the Mediterranean Sea.
Nerja itself boasts an array of bars, pubs and clubs that remain open well into the early hours. Should you time your visit well, the village may be hosting a vibrant cultural festival or local event.
These range from live music performances and outdoor concerts to art exhibitions and traditional celebrations.
However, if you simply fancy a quiet drink in the evening rather than a full-blown night out, the village and its surrounding areas boast a wealth of restaurants and tapas bars serving cocktails, wine and nibbles.
Be sure to sample classic local dishes such as gazpacho (cold tomato soup), paella, fried fish and Spanish omelette.
The nearest airport to the village is Málaga, where return flights can be snapped up from as little as £28 return from London.
From there, the village is roughly an hour away by taxi, car or bus. Accommodation options are equally varied and affordable.
A double room in the village can be booked from £51 per night – just £25.50 per person. Alternatively, an entire apartment is available from £62 per night.
