Law firm Addleshaw Goddard has advised Mapfre on the launch of its second biomethane investment vehicle, Bioenergy Agro Iberia, targeting a fund size of €100 million.
The new fund, in which Abante serves as manager and IAM Carbonzero as adviser, will invest in a diversified portfolio of biomethane projects across Spain and Portugal. Its scope extends beyond core gas production to include biofertiliser and biocompost management, logistics, and the production and commercialisation of CO₂ for greenhouse use.
A key development from Mapfre’s first biomethane vehicle, the new fund expressly provides for investment outside Spain, with Portugal as its initial geographical expansion. Mapfre, Abante and IAM Carbonzero have identified the sector as a significant driver of decarbonisation and sustainable energy infrastructure development.
The fund’s strategy is underpinned by the early-stage nature of the Iberian biomethane market, which proponents argue offers strong growth potential on the back of a supportive European regulatory environment and rising demand for renewable gas.
The Addleshaw Goddard team was led by Isabel Rodríguez, partner and head of funds, alongside senior associate Enrique Torné and associate Lara Taylor.
Rodríguez said the firm had observed growing investor appetite for specialised biomethane and green infrastructure vehicles, which she described as increasingly important instruments for directing capital into energy transition projects combining stable returns with ESG performance.
