Rabat – Barcelona’s dream of reaching the 100-point milestone this season is officially over following a loss against Alavés on Wednesday.

The match, held at Mendizorroza Stadium in Vitoria-Gasteiz, marked Barcelona’s fifth defeat of the campaign. All of the team’s defeats this season happened away from home.

Alavés are currently fighting to avoid relegation, yet they managed to beat Barcelona 1-0 and officially end the champions’ hopes of breaking the points record.

The match was decided by a single goal just before halftime. Ibrahim Diabaté scored the winner for Alavés in stoppage time, firing a volley past Szczęsny following a corner kick.

Even though Barcelona kept most of the possession, they struggled to create good chances. And they were ultimately unable to find an equalizer before the final whistle.

The Spanish giants secured the La Liga title earlier this season with a 2-0 victory in El Clásico. While the team remained focused on achieving a perfect statistical finish, their latest defeat in Vitoria ensures they will fall short of that historic total.

The Catalan club missed their final challenge of the year and will no longer match the 100-point record set by Mourinho’s Real Madrid in 2011-12 or Vilanova’s Barcelona in 2012-13.

Hansi Flick changed the lineup by starting several new players. He gave Álvaro Cortés his debut and started Szczesny in goal to protect Joan García’s lead for the Zamora Trophy.

“The team, and I, want 100 points, and for that we have to win the three games we have left,” Flick said at Tuesday’s press conference ahead of the visit to Alavés.

Barça failed to score last night for the first time in La Liga this season. They struggled offensively and finished the game without a single shot on target.

Despite entering the match as a second-half substitute, Ferran Torres was unable to find the back of the net and improve his standing in the race for the Zarra Trophy.

Torres remains tied with teammate Lamine Yamal at 16 goals, leaving him just one ahead of Mikel Oyarzabal before Real Sociedad’s match this Thursday.
