Socceroos goalkeeper Maty Ryan was at the centre of a huge result in Spain on Monday morning (AEST), helping Levante jump out of the relegation zone for the first time in months after they won a controversial game 2-0 against Mallorca, who themselves are now facing the drop.

Ryan made several outstanding saves, earning himself a 9.2 out of 10 rating on global football website Sofascore to keep his fourth clean sheet in six matches.

Levante took the lead in the 32nd minute when Carlos Espi pounced on a mis-hit pass by a Mallorca defender and rolled the ball into an empty net, sparking scenes of jubilation at the Estadi Ciutat de València, as the home fans dared to dream of a great escape.

And that dream looked like it had turned into reality in fairly bizarre circumstances, when Levante were awarded a penalty after a highly unusual string of events.

Substitute Roger Brugue was left lying in a heap in the 83rd minute after his attempted volley went flying over the bar, with the 29-year-old appearing to claim he had been fouled in the process.

The Mallorca players were having none of it, with one of them, Johan Mojica, marching up to Brugue and pinching him on the back of the head, which prompted him to lash out at Mojica.

The end result was red cards for both players and a penalty for Levante, which was promptly smashed against the crossbar.

But victory was eventually assured a few minutes later when Kervin Arriaga headed in from a corner, sealing a crucial 2-0 win.

It was Levante’s third in a row, a brilliant turnaround from the Valencia-based club that incredibly sees them now occupying 15th spot on La Liga’s ladder with one match remaining, having been deep in the relegation zone for most of this year.

Ryan has played a key role in their resurrection, keeping four clean sheets in their last six games, and has 10 for the season overall, a statistic that gets more impressive when taking into account that Levante have conceded more shots on goal than any other team in the league.

The 34-year-old has made a total of 116 saves this season, the third most of any goalkeeper in La Liga.
