Summary: Iberia’s new direct route between Monterrey and Madrid strengthens northern Mexico’s international connectivity as nearshoring-driven investment and industrial expansion increase demand for corporate and logistics travel. The partnership between Iberia and Viva expands access to more than 140 global destinations for passengers across 32 Mexican cities, reinforcing Monterrey’s role as a strategic business hub ahead of rising tourism and air traffic linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Iberia will launch direct flights between Monterrey and Madrid beginning June 2, expanding international connectivity for northern Mexico and providing access to more than 140 global destinations through the airline’s network and commercial alliances.
The new route, announced from Iberia’s corporate headquarters in Spain, is expected to strengthen tourism, corporate travel and cross-border business ties at a time when Nuevo Leon continues to attract investment tied to nearshoring and industrial expansion. The service will operate three times per week from Monterrey International Airport using Airbus A330-200 aircraft with capacity for 288 passengers.
Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel García said through this new connection, the state will gain access to 140 cities across Europe and beyond. The route will provide a direct alternative for travelers who currently rely on connecting flights through other international airports to reach Europe, potentially reducing travel times for both leisure and business passengers.
Iberia Expands Northern Mexico Connectivity
The launch of the Monterrey-Madrid route comes amid growing demand for international business travel in northern Mexico, where manufacturing, logistics and technology sectors continue expanding alongside foreign investment flows. The new service also reflects Iberia’s strategy to deepen its presence in the Mexican market through partnerships and network integration.
Flights will be operated aboard Airbus A330-200 aircraft designed for long-haul routes, allowing the airline to increase seat availability during the summer travel season while maintaining year-round connectivity between Mexico and Europe.
In addition to direct access to Madrid, passengers will be able to connect through Iberia’s network and partner airlines to destinations across Europe and other regions. Iberia maintains alliances with American Airlines, British Airways and Aer Lingus, while also operating one of the largest route networks at Madrid-Barajas Airport.
Viva Partnership Strengthens Regional Access
The Monterrey expansion is also tied to a growing commercial alliance between Viva and Iberia, aimed at improving international connectivity for passengers across Mexico. Through the agreement, travelers from 32 Mexican cities will be able to use Monterrey as a connecting hub for flights to Europe. The partnership allows Viva customers to purchase Iberia-operated flights directly through Viva’s digital platforms, reported MBN.
During the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) in Madrid, Viva said the expanded codeshare agreement now enables passengers to book flights from both Mexico City International Airport and Monterrey International Airport to Madrid through the airline’s website.
According to Viva, the partnership provides access to more than 40 destinations in Spain, as well as additional markets in Europe and the Middle East. The airline said the agreement is designed to simplify international travel by integrating long-haul connectivity into its booking platform.
Viva transported nearly 30 million passengers in 2025, the highest annual traffic volume in its 19-year history, according to the company. The airline described the figure as “a historic number for the airline,” reflecting sustained growth since operations began in 2006. The carrier also said passengers booking Iberia-operated flights through Viva channels will earn Doters loyalty points, adding that the program has surpassed 10 million members.
Airlines Prepare for World Cup Travel Demand
The latest announcements come as Mexican airlines and tourism authorities prepare for increased international travel linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will bring visitors to Mexico beginning in June 2026. During FITUR, Viva executives met with tourism officials from multiple Mexican states, including Nuevo Leon, Jalisco, Quintana Roo and Yucatan, to coordinate connectivity and capacity planning ahead of the tournament.
Viva CEO Juan Carlos Zuazua also announced new domestic routes aimed at strengthening tourism and business travel demand. The airline confirmed the return of service between Cancun and Acapulco, with operations scheduled to begin April 2 and including a stop at Felipe Ángeles International Airport. The carrier additionally unveiled a new Cancun-Saltillo route expected to launch in March as part of efforts to strengthen commercial activity and connectivity in Coahuila.
Since its founding in 2006, Viva has transported more than 180 million passengers across a network of more than 190 domestic and international routes. The airline currently operates a fleet of 104 Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft.
