The man who was found dead in his vehicle near the Valencia Town Center Mall Wednesday morning has been identified.

Jeffrey Koons, 47, a transient, was the person found near the Valencia Town Center Mall, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, first responders received reports of an SUV with a broken window and a firearm on the floor next to the car in the 24200 block of Valencia Boulevard near the Valencia Mall, said Shirley Miller, a spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at the time of the incident.

Firefighters also responded to the scene, and the person later identified as Koons, who was inside the vehicle, was pronounced dead on arrival, said Justin Yang, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department homicide detectives responded to the scene and determined that Koons’ manner of death was suicide, according to Deputy Fantom with the LASD Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
