One of the oldest national football rivalries will be reignited on the World Cup stage.

The Round of 16 continues with the 42nd all-time meeting between Spain and Portugal. The teams most recently met in June 2025, when Portugal defeated Spain in penalty kicks for the UEFA Nations League title. Spain holds the edge in victories, with 17.

Portugal advanced following a 2-1 victory over Croatia in the Round of 32. Ahead of today’s match, five-time Ballon d’Or winner and Portugal national team mainstay Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, announced that this World Cup, his sixth, will be his last.

Spain reached the Round of 16 following a 3-0 shutout of Austria. Through four matches at the tournament, they’ve yet to let an opponent score.
