MASON CITY, Iowa — A Mason City police officer and another driver were hurt Tuesday in a multi-vehicle collision at an intersection while the officer was responding to an emergency call.
It happened around 2:50 p.m. at the intersection of Fourth Street Southeast and South Kentucky Avenue. The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office says Officer Wilfredo Almendarez Valencia, 27, was driving a marked police SUV southbound on South Kentucky Avenue with his emergency lights and siren on when he collided with a car driven by Brian Anderson, 56 of Mason City.
Deputies say Anderson was traveling westbound through the intersection when the police vehicle hit the passenger side of his car. The impact caused Anderson’s car to spin into a third vehicle driven by Karry Graney, 56 of Mason City.
Almendarez Valencia and Anderson were treated at the scene for injuries that were not life-threatening. Another Mason City police officer then took Almendarez Valencia to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center for further evaluation. Anderson declined to be taken to the hospital.
Graney was not hurt in the crash.
The Mason City Fire Department,Mason City Paramedics, and the Mason City Police Department assisted at the scene.
The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.
