Manchester United’s need of midfield reinforcements has heated up in recent weeks, although they received some good news on Wednesday night. Michael Carrick’s side had been dealt a blow after key target Mateus Fernandes opted for a move to Tottenham in an £85million move.

But the Red Devils finally appear to have snagged one of their targets after agreeing a £50million deal with Chelsea for Andrey Santos. Signings in the engine room are of the utmost importance for United who are preparing for their return to the Champions League this season. The departure of Casemiro and long-term injury of Manuel Ugarte had left them desperately short in the middle of the park.

And while that has now been partly addressed, there may be further good news on the horizon for United after an apparent change of heart from Real Madrid when it comes to Aurelien Tchouameni’s future. In regards to other summer targets, United are said to have reignited interest in a player currently starring at the World Cup. Aurelien Tchouameni has been reported as a key target for United for much of the summer. Nothing concrete regarding a potential bid has been indicated but United fans will be positive following the latest update in their chase of the Frenchman.

Writing for FlashScore, Athletic editor Dean Jones has reported that Real Madrid’s previous stance of keeping the 26-year-old at the Bernabeu has softened. He wrote that the Spanish giants are ‘opening up’ to the possibility of parting ways with the midfielder – who has been reportedly valued at £85million – in what could be the U-turn United need to conclude a deal.

World Cup star talks

The Red Devils’ foray into the transfer market could see them clinch the signing of Borussia Dortmund full-back Ryerson. German outlet BILD reports the Premier League outfit have held ‘renewed contact’ with the 28-year-old’s representatives.

Ryerson is currently starring for Norway in the World Cup and has impressed with his performances with the Scandinavian country set to face England in the quarter-finals of the tournament on Saturday.

The newspaper reported that Ryerson’s run of form in North America hasn’t gone unnoticed and United have long had the defender on their list of targets. He’s been a key player for Dortmund since joining the club in 2023 but with United returning to the Champions League this upcoming season, Carrick is keen on improving the depth and quality of his squad.
