Spain, Massachusetts Announce Expanded Trading Relationship

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — One day after celebrating the Spanish government’s creation of a trade office in Massachusetts, Governor Maura Healey welcomed Spain´s First Deputy Prime Minister, Carlos Cuerpo, to the Massachusetts State House on Wednesday.

It was also announced that Spain has created a venture capital fund to invest in biotech firms from Spain and Massachusetts.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting was the Ambassador of Spain to the U.S., Angeles Moreno.

The governor said that Massachusetts’ relationship with Spain goes back hundreds of years, and these latest announcements are growing that relationship.

Cuerpo said Massachusetts is “a strategic destination for Spanish investment and innovation.”

Spain is a strong trading partner to Massachusetts, with more than $750 million worth of goods exchanged in 2025.

Massachusetts is also home to Spanish businesses that include CMZ Machinery Group, Santander Bank, Mapfre Insurance, Avangrid, and CT Engineering.

the former school to be renovated. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>For years, residents have complained about the building’s crumbling infrastructure since two schools located there shut down, one in 2022, the other in 2024. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Scheduled for demolition since 2019, the building is being used as a community center. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Allston-Brighton is Boston’s second-largest neighborhood in population, trailing only Dorchester.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Residents said the neighborhood deserves the same kind of community center presence that others like Dorchester and the North End have. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>\u003ca href=\”https://www.boston.gov/departments/city-council/liz-breadon\” target=\”_blank\”>\u003cstrong>Boston City Council President Liz Breadon\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> represents Allston and Brighton and was one of several elected officials who attended the rally. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The \u003ca href=\”https://jphonkband.wordpress.com/\” target=\”_blank\”>\u003cstrong>Jamaica Plain Honk Band\u003c/strong>\u003c/a> provided the entertainment.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Breadon said the effort to fund the Jackson Mann project goes back many years. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>If approved, she said it’s an investment in the neighborhood’s future. "This is a 50-year commitment going into the future, or longer," she said. "Maybe it’s a 100-year commitment." \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Supporters said the community center will cost about $65 million-dollars, a project \u003ca href=\”https://www.boston.gov/departments/city-council/ruthzee-louijeune\” target=\”_blank\”>\u003cstrong>At-Large Boston City Councilor Ruthzee Louijeune \u003c/strong>\u003c/a>said residents have wanted for a long time. "It’s years that you have all been demanding this community center," she said at the rally. "You all deserve one just like every other neighborhood." \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Officials said that while parts of the building are dilapidated, it still has been holding community meetings and programs, including recreational activities and English language classes. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The city, meanwhile, said the community center project is currently in a ‘study underway’ phase, and (WBZ NewsRadio) — Officials in Belmont have launched a new online system to report gas or oil-powered leaf blower violations. This comes after local police said they received complaints about the device.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“[The form] helps ensure concerns are routed quickly and handled efficiently,” police said.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The town’s bylaw prohibits the use of all leaf blowers year-round and has been in effect since the beginning of this year.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>However, some residents told WBZ NewsRadio that the dedicated reporting system may be too much.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“I don’t think I’ll bother reporting a neighbor if they use it for 20 minutes,” a resident said.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Others added that the form could be helpful when needed.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“I generally wouldn’t know who to call to complain about it,” another resident added. “So, the fact that they have a dedicated service for doing that, I think it’s going to be really helpful for people like me.”\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Violators of the ban will be issued a warning for the first delivery companies to acquire a new permit to operate in the city.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The first-of-its kind ordinance, which went into effect on Saturday, requires companies like DoorDash, UberEats, and GrubHub submit proof of insurance policies that cover their drivers, while also providing driver data to the transportation department.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The data collected will examine things such as the type of vehicles used during deliveries, the restaurants that have the largest number of orders and how fast deliveries are made.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The ordinance comes as the city says that the number of food delivery drivers has rapidly increased in the area, with the increase mostly being attributed to drivers who use mopeds.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Some drivers who use these small vehicles have caused problems in the city by driving recklessly in and out of traffic, according to residents like Marcia.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“They don’t wait on the lights, they turn wherever they want, sometimes they’re crossing and they’re in the way, sometimes you don’t know they’re coming left and they’re behind you [or] in front of you,” she said.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>There are also concerns about larger vehicles causing street congestion when drivers double-park to pick up and drop off food.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Some people who live in the city say they are in support of the new ordinance and believe that it’s a good first step.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“They run red lights, they don’t obey traffic rules and its dangerous I’ve had near collisions whilst running the intersections,” said Back Bay resident Damien.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“I think it’s important that that law does stays in place and then they have to follow it up with fines, you know people have to be held responsible when they endanger the lives of others,” said Damien.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Another proposal from City Council looks to possibly outright ban Mopeds deliveries, which some residents disagree with as they say it’s a step too far.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“A lot of people rely on that as there way of living and their job and I don’t think its necessarily fair to every delivery driver to just completely Maura Healey announced her proposal to protect young children from the dangers of social media Tuesday, days after the Massachusetts House of Representatives passed different legislation with a similar goal.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Under Healey’s proposal, social media companies would be required to verify the ages of their users and "establish strong default safety settings for users under 18," according to a press release from the governor’s office.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>"Social media is driving a tremendous amount of anxiety and hurting kids in a number of different ways," Healey said. "That happens because these social media platforms, these companies, have designed products to be addictive and to exploit young people’s insecurities."\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The safety settings outlined in Healey’s proposal would be designed to disable "addictive" features, including infinite scroll and auto-play. Social media companies would also be required to limit users to two hours of cumulative time per day on their platforms. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>These settings would be enabled by default but could be changed by users who are more than 16 years old. Users 15 and under would need a parent or guardian to change the settings.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Healey’s proposal stands in contrast to other legislation weaving through the State House.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Last year, the Senate passed a bill to ban students from using cell phones at school. It’s facing backlash from some residents who’ve been trying to stop it for months. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The affordable housing project from construction company PulteGroup, Inc. was recently approved by Plymouth’s zoning board of appeals in a 4 -1 vote this week.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>The project, which will consist of three separate buildings located near Plymouth Harbor in North Plymouth, will include 163 units.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Some residents have been trying to stop this from happening with many displaying signs in their yards that read ‘say no to Pulte’s 163-unit 40B’.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>This comes as residents have claimed that the new buildings will be constructed in an area that they feel is too small and cramped. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“It seems to be too large for this space,” said one man.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“It doesn’t seem to serve the purpose of everyone,” said another man.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>There are also concerns that the development will have permanent impacts for the North Plymouth Rail Trail, which is a popular community walking trail located near the site.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Some also believe that more traffic caused by the construction will lead to less parking for others and will create more problems for the town.  \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“I have a 22-month-old daughter and there’s already traffic that we’re worried about,” said one homeowner.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Another major concern is with one of the buildings’ locations near a federally designated EPA Superfund site that was discovered to be contaminated with arsenic. \u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>Even though the project has been approved some say there’s still more work to be done to come to a possible resolution.\u003c/p>\n\n\u003cp>“The fight’s not over till the
