Mapfre, the global insurance group, has agreed to take a 38.9% holding in Tuio, a specialist digital insurance distributor built on advanced technology and mature artificial intelligence capabilities.

The stake will be assembled through two routes: buying shares directly from a number of existing shareholders and then taking part in a capital increase. The deal will enable Tuio, whose operations are currently confined to Spain, to push forward with its innovation agenda and roll out its digital model in fresh markets across Latin America and Europe, regions where Mapfre is already established. Internationalisation is set to begin next year.

Tuio holds the distinction of being the first insurance app globally to be embedded within ChatGPT for selling insurance products. Since that integration went live in early February, AI assistants have been responsible for more than 20% of the company’s new client acquisitions.

For Mapfre, the move reflects its belief that AI, and agentic AI in particular, marks a profound technological shift for both the insurance sector and the wider digital economy. The investment allows the group to deepen its focus on more agile, personalised distribution approaches aligned with evolving consumer needs, blending technological capability with the added value of human advice. The insurer also believes AI can help narrow the insurance protection gap by opening up access to cover for groups that have historically been underserved.

Established in Spain in 2021, Tuio has built a business model grounded in technology, digitalisation and the advanced application of agentic AI to insurance processes. The firm operates across several lines of business, with a proposition centred on simplicity, efficiency and a strong digital customer experience.
