Capacity on lines C1, C2 and C6 of the Valencia suburban network will increase by 30 per cent following the gradual introduction of Civia electric trains, manufactured by Alstom, which are more modern and have a higher capacity.
Renfe will replace the current 447 and 464 series trains with 41 units from the 465 series, which will enable a greater number of passengers to be carried on the three lines.
Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, through the public operator Renfe, is thus seeking to meet growing transport demand and increase the number of seats available on the electrified lines of the Valencia suburban network (Cercanías).
The 41 Civia Series 465 EMUs will gradually replace the 34 Series 447 trains and seven Series 464 trains currently operating on lines C1, C2 and C6.
The main advantage is the greater capacity of the new EMUs. Each Civia S465 unit consists of five railcars, compared to the three railcars of the S447 trains, and can carry up to 748 passengers.
The 41 trains will be introduced once the modernisation work on the railcars has been completed; the work is focused in particular on improving passenger comfort and facilities.
By the end of 2026, the Valencia Cercanías network is set to receive 22 new trains, with a further 19 units to be introduced progressively throughout 2027.
The new trains will strengthen services on the Valencia–Gandia (C1), Valencia–Xàtiva–Moixent (C2) and Valencia–Castelló (C6) lines, where the number of seats available each day will increase significantly.
More seats for passengers in Valencia
Increased capacity is one of the main benefits of replacing the trains. At the same time, the modernisation will reduce the average age of the rolling stock and bring improvements in terms of reliability, comfort and accessibility.
The 447 series trains, 34 of which are currently in service on the three lines, entered service in the early 1990s and have a capacity of 549 seats, including both seated and standing places.
The seven 464 series trains are part of the Civia family and consist of two cab cars, one low-floor trailer railcar and one high-floor trailer railcar. They have a capacity of approximately 600 passengers.
In contrast, the 465 series Civia trains were developed specifically to meet the growing demand for transport in major metropolitan areas and to renew the rolling stock. Thanks to their modular configuration, accessibility and increased seating capacity, each unit can carry up to 748 passengers.
The Series 465 trains entered service between 2003 and 2012 and are fitted with low-floor railcars, level with the platform, facilitating access for people with reduced mobility.
By introducing the 41 Civia S465 trains, Renfe aims not only to modernise the train fleet in Valencia, but above all to increase transport provision and passenger capacity by 30 per cent across the three Cercanías lines.
