MADRID — William “Roger” Thompson, 91, of Madrid, NY passed away peacefully in his home on August 17, 2026, surrounded by his loving family under Hospice care.

Roger is survived by his wife,Mary Jane, his four daughters, Debra (Peter) Thompson-Pastras, Laurie (Edward) Wikoff, Lesley Thompson, Joanne (Robert) Maransky, and one who grew to be his daughter, Sara Badano. Roger had seven beloved grandchildren, Amanda, Peter, Haley, Thea, Devin, Stephen, Lauren, and four great-grandchildren.

Roger was born on April 27, 1935, to Arthur and Margaret Thompson. He was a 1953 graduate of Madrid High School, attended Canton ATI and served two years in the military.

Upon returning home from the Army, Roger joined his father working on the family dairy farm, which he continued for the rest of his working years.

Roger and Mary Jane were married in 1958 and blessed by their marriage of 68 years.

Roger was a life-long member of the Scotch Presbyterian Church and the Chipman community.

He enjoyed playing basketball in his youth and continued as a fan. He also enjoyed traveling with Mary Jane, cutting wood (he was known for his remarkable wood piles), fishing, vegetable gardening and sharing corn and potatoes with neighbors.

Roger especially looked forward to the gatherings of his extended family who love to visit “the farm.”

A memorial service will be held at the Scotch Presbyterian Church of Madrid on Saturday, September 19th, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.

Visitation will precede the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. with burial to follow immediately after, in Madrid Cemetery.
