LaLiga is set to return to the Spotify Camp Nou. Hansi Flick’s side take on Athletic Club on 27 August (kick-off 9.30pm CEST), which will be the first midweek match of this season. The game is actually the matchday one fixture, which was changed as both teams had players in the final rounds of the recent World Cup. The blaugranes come in to the match after defeating Elche (0-5), a real statement of intent to begin the league, while the Basque side lost 1-3 to Sevilla at the San Mamés stadium.

Hansi Flick is now in his third season at the Spotify Camp Nou. His opposite number for this match is Edin Terzic, who is working in Spanish football for the first time as Athletic coach. The coaches know each other personally and have faced each other once before, back in the 2020/21 season, when Flick was in charge of Bayern Munich and Terzic was at Borussia Dortmund. The current blaugrana coach ended up on the winning side, after a 4-2 victory featuring a hat-trick by Robert Lewandowski.

Barça’s most recent home defeat against Athletic Club in LaLiga was back in the 2000/01 season, some 24 years ago. The record since then is 21 wins and 3 draws in FC Barcelona’s favour against Athletic, with the run continuing during the spell played at the Estadi Olimpic on Montjuïc.
First match back at Spotify Camp Nou was against Athletic
Less than a year ago, FC Barcelona returned to the new Spotify Camp Nou and Athletic Club were the opponents. The attendance was 45,157 and the fans enjoyed a resounding 4-0 victory. That 22 November Fermín López also made his 100th appearance for the Club, a date he will always remember. This time it’s the first LaLiga home match of the 2026/27 season at the Stadium against the Basque side.

At the start of the 2023/24 season, the first year of Hansi Flick’s tenure, Barça’s first home match was played at Estadi Lluís Companys. It was the start of two and a bit seasons on Montjuïc and Athletic Club were the first opponents. Barça won 2-1, with goals by Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal, claiming their second league win of that season.

The Catalan winger’s four goals against Athletic have come in different matches, and his first against them was his third goal for FC Barcelona in the 2023/24 Copa del Rey quarterfinals.
