Saturday brought more adversity with a pair of three-set matches. Spain Park first faced the Southside Panthers and fell 25-22 in the first set. The Jags bounced back in dominant fashion with a 25-15 second-set victory, and they closed it out with a 15-9 win in the third set.
The reverse happened in the final match of pool play against St. Mary’s. Spain Park win the first set in 25-19 fashion, but an improved effort in the second set from the Turkeys led to a 25-17 win to equalize the set. The two teams went to extra points in the third set before the Jags won 16-14.
The Jags took the 4-0 record into bracket play and faced Montgomery Catholic in their first matchup. Spain Park took the first set by a score of 25-17, but the second set was much closer and required extra points to separate the teams. The Jags finished it off with a 26-24 win.
That allowed Spain Park to advance to face an out-of-state team in Madison-Rigeland. The Jags fell behind the ball in the first set with a 25-22 loss. However, they flipped the scoreline on its head with a 25-22 win to tie up the match. Spain Park finished strong to win the third set 15-11.
The Jags would finish out the tournament with a straight-set loss to Spanish Fort, which included a 25-10 first-set loss and 25-23 second-set defeat.
Through the first weekend of the season, Peyton Harrington has 84 kills, 53 digs and 19 aces, Chloe Shumate earned 81 kills, Camdyn Kyes has 79 digs and a 2.27 serve-receive rating, Lynlee Franks has earned 92 assists and 31 digs and Sarah Latham has 21 kills, 10 blocks and six aces.
