The Three Cultures of the Mediterranean Foundation once again opens the programme for the Seville Flamenco Biennial with a film series that positions cinema as a meeting place for cultures, artistic languages and shared memories.
Entitled ‘Flamencas’, this programme pays tribute to the women who have made a decisive contribution to building, preserving and promoting the world of flamenco both within and beyond our borders.
Through a carefully curated selection of films and documentaries, the series traces the careers of key figures in flamenco singing, dancing and creative expression, introducing the audience to stories of talent, commitment, freedom and personal triumph.
These works celebrate women’s creative power and affirm their role as leading figures in one of the Mediterranean’s most universal cultural expressions.
This series also represents a commitment to cinema made from a woman’s perspective and to recognising women’s contribution to the audiovisual industry, fostering new spaces for visibility, reflection and dialogue between filmmaking and cultural heritage.
The series will begin on 8 September at 8.30 pm with a screening of the documentary ‘Flamencas, mujeres, fuerza y duende’ by Marcos Medina and Jonathan González.
This documentary explores the presence, evolution and struggles of women across several generations within a traditionally male-dominated art form. The film brings together the biographies of 60 female singers, guitarists and dancers from the past and present, representing a wide range of personalities, careers and eras, from traditional flamenco to fusion styles. These are women whose talent – whether in singing, dancing or guitar playing – forms part of that precious legacy which continues to grow even today, free from dogma or rigid conventions.
