The move repositions Barcelona from a Mediterranean-facing exchange point into what the company describes as a full east-west gateway with direct access to Atlantic and transatlantic cable systems.

The corridor links traffic from the Mediterranean, Middle East, Africa and Asia to the Atlantic coast, according to Exa, cutting cross-Spain latency for transatlantic-bound traffic. The route also serves Zaragoza, a rapidly growing hyperscale and AI data centre hub in Spain’s Aragón region backed by AWS, Microsoft and QTS investment, and now positioned between Madrid, Lisbon and Barcelona-bound European traffic flows as well as transatlantic capacity heading to the Mediterranean.

Exa operates the main eight data centres across Catalonia and has long used Barcelona as an aggregation point for Mediterranean subsea cables. The new terrestrial link is designed to shorten the path between those cables and North America, and gives customers relying on subsea capacity from the Middle East, Africa and Asia what Exa calls a direct route into the transatlantic ecosystem, rather than Barcelona functioning purely as a landing and aggregation point. Traffic crossing Spain, which previously had limited routing options, can now take multiple distinct paths, reducing single points of failure.

“Barcelona has always been a natural meeting point between East and West,” said Steve Roberts, SVP of strategic investments and product management at Exa Infrastructure. “By extending our terrestrial long-haul footprint directly to the Atlantic corridor, we are giving our customers, and the subsea players that already land there, a genuinely shorter and more resilient path to transatlantic systems.”

It is the latest expansion for Exa’s European backbone since it added the Dunant cable as a fifth transatlantic route linking Paris and Bordeaux to Virginia Beach, Richmond and Ashburn, with onward connections to Madrid, Barcelona and Marseille. The Barcelona-Bilbao route extends that same diversification logic inland, adding a Spanish terrestrial path to the mix of routes Exa offers between its European footprint and the Atlantic.

The move echoes a wider pattern of European operators consolidating multiple cable systems around single landing points to reduce transatlantic hop dependency, also visible in MDM’s plans to stack transatlantic, Nordic and continental European routes onto its Galway landing station in Ireland.

Route diversity and the fragility of Europe’s connectivity infrastructure are due to be discussed in depth at Capacity Europe 2026 in October, where Roberts is confirmed to speak on a panel examining how the industry is building resilient fibre and subsea networks to support Europe’s next era of connectivity, compute and data growth.
