That made the third set a crucial one to decide who would control the match the rest of the way. Luckily for the hosts, it was Spain Park.
SPHS took command of the third set and put on a convincing showing to finish strong with a 25-18 victory. That put Spain Park up 2-1 in the third set and just one game away from victory.
However, NHS didn’t go down without a fight and made life difficult for SPHS to close out the match. Nevertheless, Spain Park saw out the match victory by winning the fourth set by a score of 25-19.
The fourth-set win polished off the 3-1 win in the match and gave SPHS another big early-season victory.
Peyton Harrington led the attack with 19 kills as well as 12 digs, two aces and a block. Chloe Shumate joined her in double figures with 16 kills, four digs, a block and two assists. Sarah Latham nearly did as well with nine kills but stepped up for three total blocks.
Lynlee Franks facilitated the offense with 35 assists while also chipping in 16 digs defensively.
On defense, Camdyn Kyes held steady with 23 digs and a 2.47 serve-receive rating off 30 receptions. She also secured three aces and three assists.
Spain Park improved to 8-1 overall with the win. The Jags will hit the road on Thursday, Aug. 27 at 5:30 p.m. to face the Bob Jones Patriots. They will then return to Birmingham for a unique outdoor game at Vestavia Hills’ Wald Park, where they will face the Mountain Brook Spartans. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29.
