Jonathan David set to join Atlético Madrid on loan – Juventus will cover 50% of salary

Jonathan David is set to join Atlético Madrid from Juventus. Transfermarkt can confirm a report by Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano that a deal is all but complete. The 26-year-old Canadian men’s national team striker initially joins Atlético Madrid on loan with an option to buy worth €25 million. That option is €5m below David’s current market value of €30m. Juventus will also cover 50% of David’s salary while the Canadian is on loan in Spain.

The loan agreement ends, for now, a brief chapter for David in Italy. The striker joined the Serie A giants just last summer on a free transfer from Lille. David signed for Lille in 2020 in a deal worth €27m, which still makes him the most expensive Canadian in history. In France, David scored 109 goals in 232 games across all competitions.

With his contract up last summer, Italy was supposed to be the next big step in his career. Although Juve were somewhat removed from their golden era, they are still one of the biggest clubs in world football and were supposed to help David become a legit superstar. But David struggled to find his form in Italy, scoring just eight goals and five assists in 47 games across all competitions for the Turin club last year.

David to Atlético Madrid – Looks to reset career in Spain

As a result, both sides were looking to move on this summer. Despite a slower year, interest in David remained strong. The CanMNT striker was linked with moves to Como, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Paris FC, Olympique Marseille, and Olympique Lyon in the Transfermarkt rumour mill. Ultimately, Atlético Madrid have won the race to sign the striker.In fact, his transfer to Atleti might have further implications. Diego Simeone’s club currently have two center-forwards under contract: Julián Alvarez and Alexander Sørloth.

Alvarez has been heavily linked with a move away from the club, and even though Atleti have been insisting that the player isn’t for sale, there could still be movement before the window shuts tomorrow. Sørloth, meanwhile, is already 30, and the Norwegian striker has been very hot and cold throughout his career. In other words, there might be a real opportunity here for David to become Atleti’s main striker going forward.
