Since joining Napoli in August 2024, Scott McTominay has emerged as a leading figure, winning over not only his coach at the time, Antonio Conte, but the whole of Serie A – and probably leaving more than a tinge of regret at Manchester United, the only club he had known before moving to Italy. Underused in England, he has flourished with the Azzurri and become one of the league’s most highly regarded midfielders.
After helping Napoli win their fourth scudetto, the Scot was named among the 30 nominees for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, finishing 18th.
Max Allegri’s arrival in the Napoli dugout has not altered the club’s plans for McTominay, either in the immediate future or over the longer term. The midfielder is tied to the Italian champions until June 2028 on a contract worth around $6.5 million per season.
However, at 29 and in the prime of his personal and professional life, he could be tempted if an offer came from one of the biggest clubs in the world. It would represent another major step in his career and one that would be difficult to ignore – especially if José Mourinho were the man calling.
Scott McTominay will undergo corrective surgery for a “mild benign arrhythmia”, his club Napoli has said.

The pair share a special bond. McTominay feels a deep sense of gratitude toward the Special One because it was the Portuguese coach who gave him his opportunity during the 2016-17 season, handing him his Manchester United debut and continuing to trust him until his career took off. That is why, in an interview with Corriere della Sera, the Napoli midfielder did not hesitate when asked about Mourinho, who now occupies one of the most prestigious dugouts in soccer history: “If Mou called me about Real Madrid, honestly, I’d think about it…”
