Marina Port Valencia is putting the finishing touches to preparations for the first Spain Sail Grand Prix Valencia, with 13 SailGP teams set to battle it out on the waters off the city on 5 and 6 September.
Some of the world’s top sailors will race aboard the championship’s high-speed F50 foiling catamarans, capable of speeds exceeding 100 km/h.
The event marks SailGP’s first visit to Valencia, with Marina Port Valencia becoming the central meeting point for teams, organisers, fans and visitors throughout the weekend.
Marina Port Valencia prepares for SailGP
Over the past month, the marina has been adapting its facilities and preparing dedicated areas to accommodate the teams, boats, technicians, organisers and spectators expected for the event.
The Rolex SailGP Championship visits some of the world’s leading sailing destinations and features international teams comprising many of the sport’s leading athletes.
Hosting the championship represents another major sailing event for Valencia and builds on the city’s longstanding connection with the sea and the sport.
One of the major attractions this weekend will be the opportunity to watch the racing from the Marina Norte waterfront.
The close-to-shore racecourse will give spectators a clear view of the action as the F50s race on their foils at speeds potentially exceeding 100 km/h.
Thousands expected in Valencia
Thousands of spectators are expected to visit the marina over the weekend, providing a boost to the surrounding area while showcasing Valencia as a destination for major international sailing events.
For Marina Port Valencia, SailGP also provides an opportunity to demonstrate its facilities and ability to accommodate an international sailing competition of this scale.
The event places Valencia on the SailGP calendar alongside other leading sailing destinations around the world.
Los Gallos race on home waters
Adding to the local interest will be Spain’s Los Gallos team racing in front of a home crowd.
The Spanish crew is led by Olympic champions Diego Botín and Florian Trittel, two of the leading names in Spanish sailing.
With preparations almost complete, Marina Port Valencia will be at the centre of the action when racing gets underway on Saturday.
For Valencia, the inaugural Spain Sail Grand Prix represents another opportunity to welcome international sailing to the city, with thousands of fans expected to watch the F50 fleet racing just off the waterfront on 5 and 6 September.
