Enzo Fernández has officially climbed to third place on the list of players who have generated the most money in transfer fees throughout their careers. It took only three transfers for the Argentine midfielder to reach the podium, with a combined total of about $330 million after Manchester City paid roughly $155 million to Chelsea for the former Benfica and River Plate standout — plus additional commission fees.
Ahead of him sit only two players: Neymar, whose three transfers total around $425 million, and Romelu Lukaku, who has amassed about $400 million across an astonishing ten moves, according to Transfermarkt.
A Premier League bubble or a justified price tag?
Analysts argue that Fernández’s fee is another symptom of the Premier League’s runaway spending — a league responsible for nine of the ten most expensive transfers of the summer of 2026. But the Argentine’s case is more complicated.
Fernández publicly defended former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca when ownership turned against him, ultimately firing the coach who had led the club to a Club World Cup title. That emotional and sporting bond helped set the stage for a transfer that now defines the Premier League’s latest spending spree.
A Real Madrid flirtation that went nowhere
Fernández wanted out of Chelsea at all costs. Early in the transfer window, he saw a clear opening toward Real Madrid — in every sense. And that’s where he miscalculated. Madrid quickly denied any interest, closing that door and leaving only one viable path: Manchester City.
City CEO Ferran Soriano seized the opportunity, negotiating the fee up to $155 million, a number that could rise even higher with add‑ons.
Fernández did flirt with Madrid — no doubt about it — but it wasn’t mutual. The affection he sought, he ultimately found in a newly rebuilt City project that took shape in the summer of 2026.
Now he has to prove he’s worth it
Over the next few months, Fernández must show why he belongs among the top three money‑movers in soccer history. His biggest ally will be Maresca, the coach he defended at Chelsea and now reunites with at City.
And behind the scenes, Fernández continues to rely on Javier Pastore, still his agent and the person he trusts most.
