Spain: La Séptima readies for November DTT launch

Spanish FTA TV channel, La Séptima, has unveiled its programming strategy and presenting team ahead of its nationwide DTT launch throughout Spain on November 5th.

The new general entertainment channel, backed by veteran Spanish TV executive José Miguel Contreras, presented its project at the FesTVal television festival in Vitoria-Gasteiz, describing itself as the first broadcaster of a “new era of generalist television”.

La Séptima aims to differentiate itself through a focus on live programming, news, current affairs and entertainment, adapting the traditional FTA model to changing viewing habits and the growing importance of digital platforms and social media.

Javier Ruiz, who has left public broadcaster RTVE to become editorial director of La Séptima, said live television will be central to the channel’s strategy, stating that the speed of current affairs requires broadcasters to react to events as they happen while providing viewers with context and analysis.

Contreras said La Séptima is not aiming to challenge Spain’s established broadcasters for market leadership, but rather to occupy what he sees as an underserved space in the country’s television market.

The launch will add another nationwide general entertainment service to Spain’s DTT landscape at a time when traditional broadcasters are increasingly competing with streaming platforms and changing patterns of audiovisual consumption.
