517 takes top spot

The Champions League is back! The most prestigious club competition in the world returns this midweek with the biggest clubs determined to reach the final in Madrid in June. PSG will be aiming to become only the fourth club in history to win the European Cup/Champions League to emerge victorious in three consecutive seasons. All 36 clubs have eight fixtures in the league phase and we’ve decided to analyse which clubs have played the most games across the competitions history – qualifiers have been included.
Which clubs have played the most games in the Champions League?
Using UEFA’s official statistics, Real Madrid top the list with 517 games in the competition with Los Blancos the most decorated club after being crowned kings of Europe on 15 occasions. Bayern Munich are almost 100 games behind in second place with the German giants the only club to record a perfect season, winning all 11 games to lift the trophy in 2020. Barcelona join their arch rivals Madrid in the top three with the Catalan club playing 375 games in the Champions League.
As the graphic above illustrates, Juventus are the top ranked Italian club with 321 games and Alessandro Del Piero has represented the club most with 130 appearances. Manchester United are the top English club and they will reach a milestone on Thursday night by reaching 300 games. Liverpool are the only other English club in the top 20 with Celtic flying the flag for Scotland in 12th.
