Foothill League flag football is well underway, with Valencia currently sitting atop the standings at 3-1 in league play. Castaic and Hart are close behind at 2-1, while the rest of the league continues to jockey for position.
With three league matchups scheduled for Thursday, the standings could look much different by the end of the week.
Saugus (4-4, 2-2) Hosts Castaic (5-3, 2-1)
The Saugus Centurions will host Castaic on Thursday at 5 p.m. in what could be one of the biggest games of the week due to its potential impact on the Foothill League standings.
A Castaic victory would move the Coyotes to 3-1 in league play, tying them with Valencia for the top spot. A Saugus win, meanwhile, would allow the Centurions to leapfrog Castaic in the standings.
Aside from their loss to Valencia, the Coyotes have been strong against Foothill League opponents. Castaic opened league play with a 19-6 victory over Hart before earning a narrow 6-0 win against Canyon.
Saugus has experienced a mixed start to league play. The Centurions opened with a tough loss to Canyon before shutting out Golden Valley. They then suffered a narrow loss to Valencia before bouncing back with a close victory over West Ranch.
Makeli Leonard has been one of Saugus’ top offensive weapons this season, averaging 49 receiving yards per game. Leonard also leads the Centurions with two interceptions, according to MaxPreps statistics.
Hart (6-6, 2-1) Travels to West Ranch (2-4, 1-1)
Hart has been one of the highest-scoring teams in Foothill League play, opening league competition with a dominant 34-0 shutout of Valencia before following it up with a 46-6 victory over Golden Valley.
The Hawks’ lone league loss came against Castaic, which defeated Hart 19-6.
Hart features several playmakers on defense, including Avery Smith, who has recorded 17 sacks. Makenzie Druez and Genesis Bray have also made an impact, recording six interceptions apiece.
The Hawks will now look to get back into the win column when they travel to face West Ranch on Thursday.
Golden Valley, Canyon Look to Snap Losing Streaks
Golden Valley (2-7, 0-3) and Canyon (4-2, 1-2) will both be looking to bounce back when the two teams meet Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
The Grizzlies enter the matchup on a three-game losing streak, while the Cowboys have dropped their last two games.
For Canyon, both of those losses have come by one score in Foothill League play. The Cowboys fell 6-0 to Castaic before suffering a heartbreaking 21-20 loss to Valencia.
Despite the recent struggles, Canyon opened league play with a statement 33-6 victory over Saugus.
Golden Valley’s last three games have all come against league opponents. The Grizzlies most recently suffered a 46-6 loss to Hart, following a narrow 20-18 defeat against West Ranch. Golden Valley opened league play with a 14-0 loss to Saugus.
One team will snap its losing streak Thursday night and potentially gain some momentum heading into the back half of the league schedule.
Valencia (5-4-2, 3-1) Gets a Break Before Returning to Action
Valencia currently sits atop the Foothill League standings at 3-1 and will have the remainder of the week off before returning to action Monday, Sept. 14.
The Vikings will travel to face the Cleveland Cavaliers before returning to league action the following day, Sept. 15, when they travel to take on Golden Valley.
Valencia will then close out the season with a series of Foothill League matchups as the Vikings look to maintain their position at the top of the standings.
