Rubo Iranzo’s decision to leave Valencia after 14 years already looks the right call. According to Superdeporte, the 23-year-old has quickly settled at Real Zaragoza.
After sitting out his first match with only a couple of sessions completed, he went straight into the XI. In four games and 342 minutes since, he has formed a reliable partnership with Diego González, and in those matches Zaragoza have conceded only one, from the spot, with clean sheets against Antequera, Cartagena and Ibiza.
An exit had been considered for some time. He weighed an advanced switch to Celta Fortuna last summer but stayed. This year he felt he had to move and Zaragoza made him a priority.
The move took longer than expected while Valencia resolved right-back cover, a role he often filled despite being a centre-back. Arrivals of Pablo Maffeo and Arnau Martínez unlocked the transfer, completed on 26 August.
He signed a three-year deal, with no fixed fee involved, while Valencia kept around 20% of a future sale and a right of first refusal.
His senior outings at Mestalla were sporadic. José Bordalás handed him a debut against Levante on 20 December 2021, but neither Rubén Baraja nor Carlos Corberán extended his run.
González has publicly underlined Iranzo’s physical and technical potential. Above all, the move has given him what he needed most, regular football.
