Contractor Acciona has kickstarted the redevelopment of Real Betis’ Benito Villamarín Stadium in Seville, Spain.
The first phase of the €270M (£232M) project includes excavation work and the installation of a retaining system using diaphragm walls, required for the construction of the below-grade levels.
While this phase is ongoing, Acciona and Real Betis Balompié will finalise the new 60,000-seater stadium technical approach and final design under a collaborative delivery model.
The second phase will involve the construction of the new stadium, including the new Preferencia stand, upgrades to the existing stands – Gol Norte, Fondo and Gol Sur – as well as the development of an adjoining mixed-use building.
The project also includes several levels of underground parking, together with a new roof and facade for the stadium as a whole.
The works will be carried out in a live urban setting. Acciona said it will take steps to minimise the impact of traffic and construction noise on the surrounding Heliópolis neighbourhood.
The project follows Acciona’s completion of the new Real Betis training complex in Dos Hermanas, near Seville, three years ago.
The Spanish contractor also delivered an additional building for maintenance and access control and other road works connected to the complex, in addition to urban development works in the surrounding area.
