Madrid, Spain: Spain’s Council of Ministers has approved a €5.4 billion ($6.3 billion) framework agreement with Poland for the joint acquisition of Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft, opening the way for a major European aerial-refuelling and strategic transport programme. The approval was given on August 25, 2026, as part of the Spanish government’s latest Council of Ministers decisions. The seven-year framework agreement covers the procurement of MRTT aircraft as well as the logistical support required to bring them into service. Spain’s official announcement said the programme would be carried out with Poland through an addendum linked to the European Union’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument. The Spanish government’s announcement did not specify the number of aircraft to be purchased. However, Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, said on August 26 that the joint programme would involve “at least” seven Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft. “The next step will be signing the final agreement,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said, while confirming that Poland is expected to receive four of the aircraft by 2030. The remaining aircraft are expected to go to Spain, although the final allocation remains subject to the completion of the procurement process. Kosiniak-Kamysz described the programme as important for Poland’s military aviation ambitions, particularly as the country prepares to introduce F-35 fighter aircraft into service. “This is essential equipment for our Air Force, which is in the process of introducing F-35 aircraft into service,” he said. The Polish defence minister also described the procurement as strategically significant beyond Poland’s own air capabilities, saying, “This is also a crucial decision regarding NATO security and Poland’s security.” The A330 MRTT is a multirole aircraft designed to combine aerial refuelling with strategic air transport. It can refuel combat aircraft in flight while also transporting personnel, cargo and equipment, and can be configured for medical evacuation missions. The platform is derived from the Airbus A330-200 commercial aircraft. For Poland, the programme would establish a dedicated national aerial-refuelling capability. Warsaw currently does not operate a dedicated fleet of A330 MRTT tankers, making the planned acquisition a significant expansion of its air-support infrastructure. The aircraft would be particularly relevant to Poland’s growing fleet of advanced combat aircraft, including its incoming F-35s. The joint programme also builds on cooperation between Spain and Poland that had already been developing during 2026. The two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on May 29, 2026, covering cooperation on the potential joint acquisition of tanker aircraft. By June, discussions had moved toward implementation, with both sides examining aircraft numbers and production capacity. Spain already operates the A330 MRTT and has an established relationship with Airbus for the aircraft. The Spanish Air and Space Force’s first A330 MRTT entered service with the 45th Wing in April 2025, forming part of Spain’s existing three-aircraft tanker programme. The latest framework is therefore intended to expand cooperation between the two NATO allies while allowing Poland to participate in the procurement through the EU’s SAFE financing mechanism. Spain’s Council of Ministers authorized the seven-year framework, but the approval is not yet the final aircraft purchase contract. An Airbus spokesperson said that “negotiations will start soon,” indicating that the manufacturer and the participating governments still need to finalize the procurement arrangements before the definitive contract can be signed. The €5.4 billion figure represents the estimated value of the seven-year framework agreement and associated logistical support. It should not be treated as the confirmed unit price of the aircraft or as a final country-by-country allocation because those details have not yet been finalized publicly. The programme is nevertheless a significant step for both countries. For Poland, four A330 MRTTs by 2030 would provide a new strategic refuelling and transport capability to support its expanding combat-aircraft fleet. For Spain, the joint programme strengthens its existing MRTT capability while deepening defence cooperation with Poland under the EU’s SAFE framework. Once the final agreement is signed, the programme is expected to move from the framework and budget-approval stage into formal procurement and production planning. The final contract will determine the definitive aircraft configuration, delivery schedule, country allocation and other programme details.
