Spain\u2019s media giant Telef\u00f3nica has named Alfonso G\u00f3mez Palacio as its new CEO of virtual multichannel video program distributor Movistar Plus+, replacing Daniel\u00a0 Domenj\u00f3, who held the position for about one year. Palacio previous ran Telef\u00f3nica\u2019s Latin American operations, excluding Brazil.<\/p>\n

During his brief tenure, Domenj\u00f3 pushed Movistar into original content production, including\u00a0The Beloved, starring Javier Bardem, and La Bola Negra, with Pen\u00e9lope Cruz, which were both selected for the Cannes Film Festival.<\/p>\n

However, as of April, the Spanish streaming market remains dominated by a few global giants and one major local player. Netflix remains the overall leader with 8.7 million paid subscribers, while Prime Video, with 3 million subs, frequently leads in terms of total household penetration due to its integration with the Amazon Prime shopping membership.<\/p>\n

Netflix made news last year when it pledged to spend $1.2 billion in local Spanish content production through 2028.<\/p>\n

Movistar Plus+ ended its most-recent fiscal period with about 3.8 million combined premium TV\/SVOD subscribers.<\/p>\n
