According to Catalonia\u2019s regional president, Salvador Illa, <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/life-style\/life\/2142049\/second-most-spoken-language-london-borough\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">language<\/a> skills will be required to renew residence permits, with failure to show knowledge of Catalan likely to result in permits being revoked.<\/p>\n<p data-mce-linkchecker-status=\"valid\">While newcomers will not need to prove language proficiency when first granted <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/travel\/articles\/2136681\/spain-changes-residency-visa-laws\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">residency<\/a>, they will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of Catalan within a year if they wish to stay. Mr Illa stressed that Catalan, one of the region\u2019s three official languages, is central to integration, describing it as both &#8220;practical&#8221; and &#8220;a sign of respect&#8221;. The announcement comes as Spain rolls out a wider immigrant regularisation scheme backed by Prime Minister <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/pedro-sanchez\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pedro Sanchez<\/a>, which took effect this week.<\/p>\n<p>To support the new rules, the regional Government plans to expand free <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/uk\/2143428\/uk-towns-cities-where-half\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">language<\/a> courses. An additional 50,000 places will be created, bringing the total to 150,000 for the upcoming academic year.<\/p>\n<p>Spain\u2019s Government delegate in Catalonia, Carlos Prieto, has backed the move, calling knowledge of the language as &#8220;an important factor in socio-labour integration reports&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It remains unclear whether the rule, which is not currently imposed on <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/spain\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spanish<\/a> citizens, will be extended to include Spanish and Aranese \u2013 the region\u2019s two other official languages.<\/p>\n<p>Catalan is a distinct Western Romance language, not a dialect of Spanish, and is spoken by over nine million people across Catalonia, the <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/balearic-islands\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Balearic Islands<\/a>, Valencia (Valencian), Andorra, parts of Aragon, southern France and Alghero, Italy. It is the sole official language of <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/travel\/articles\/2021196\/beautiful-european-country-mountains-no-crowds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andorra<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Most inhabitants in Catalonia are bilingual, speaking both Catalan and Spanish. It is used as the primary language of instruction in schools in Catalonia, ensuring high proficiency at a young age.<\/p>\n<p>The use of Catalan was forbidden during the dictatorship of Francisco <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/world\/2125153\/spanish-town-frozen-in-time-residents-flee\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Franco<\/a> (1939\u20131975). Since the restoration of democracy in the late 1970s, Catalan has been revitalised and normalised, regaining official status and a major presence in media and public life.<\/p>\n<p>Barcelona is the capital and largest city in the autonomous community of Catalonia.
