Spain<\/a> would \u201cwelcome the Britain back into the EU<\/a>\u201d the Spanish Prime Minister has told Sir Sadiq Khan<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Mayor of London met with Pedro S\u00e1nchez on Tuesday to discuss cooperation between the nation and the capital. <\/a><\/p>\n

A source close to Sir Sadiq said it was \u201cwas incredibly powerful\u201d to hear that Spain would be happy to see the UK back into the EU after Brexit<\/a> did \u201creal damage to London\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cSadiq has said it before and he\u2019ll say it again \u2014 Brexit has done real damage to London and is costing Londoners, day in, day out, economically, socially and culturally,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHearing directly from Prime Minister S\u00e1nchez that Spain would welcome the UK back into the EU was incredibly powerful. Europe needs us and we need Europe.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s meeting was about London and Spain standing together \u2014 and sending a clear message that progressive, open, internationalist politics isn\u2019t going anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sadiq Khan met with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez (City Hall)<\/p>\n

The leaders, who have been loud critics of US President Donald Trump,<\/a> also discussed the rise of populist politics across Europe.<\/p>\n

Socialist Mr S\u00e1nchez has recently announced a migrant amnesty in his country, which will see hundreds of thousands of black-market workers become taxpayers in a bid to boost growth.<\/p>\n

But the policy has been criticised by the Conservative-dominated EU, which wants to crack down on illegal migration.<\/p>\n

\u201cSadiq has real admiration for Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez and observed in the meeting today that you know people by the ideals they defend,\u201d the source close to the Mayor added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Spanish PM has been prepared to call things out \u2014 on Gaza and on the direction of travel in global politics \u2014 when plenty of other leaders have kept their heads down.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s happening in the world right now is deeply worrying, with the fanning of division and attacks on democratic norms. Both London and Spain have stood strong and refused to go along with it. Sadiq and Prime Minister S\u00e1nchez were clear about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sir Sadiq has put himself at the helm of calls for the UK to ditch Brexit and fully rebuild ties with the European bloc<\/a>.<\/p>\n
