Brits heading on Spain holidays<\/a> will be hit with an extra charge for buying drinks in bars, restaurants and supermarkets.<\/p>\n There’s nothing better than grabbing a seat at a bar under the Spanish<\/a> sun for a refreshing beverage after a day spent on the beach, or enjoying a bottle of wine in the evening while devouring a plate of seafood paella. Or perhaps taking a trip to the local supermarkets of Mercadona and Carrefour to pick up some beers to enjoy on the holiday rental balcony.<\/p>\n Yet these common purchases, made by thousands of Brits every year who jet off to Spain for a sun-soaked getaway,<\/a> will soon cost more. The extra charge, of around 10 cents, will apply to drinks sold in original packaging and will be applied at the time of purchase by the establishment.<\/p>\n However, this is not a tax, but a refundable deposit – as long as customers remember to return the empty bottle or can. The deposit charge will be shown separately on the bill and can be redeemed by returning the empty package to the original point of sale or to an authorised collection machine.<\/p>\n The machines will be set up in locations across Spain, so locals and visitors can easily dispose of their empty bottles or cans. The devices will be able to scan barcodes, verify returns, and automatically refund the deposit amount, either in cash or vouchers redeemable in stores.<\/p>\n It’s been reported that supermarkets and retailers will be legally obliged to accept the return of plastic, glass, or aluminium bottles and cans, regardless of where they were purchased.
