Europe <\/a>is filled with bucket-list destinations, from sandy beaches to mountains, glaciers, and cultural cities. There is certainly something for everyone across the continent.<\/p>\n

However, it can sometimes be hard to decide exactly where to travel, <\/a>and there is no shortage of options. So, I asked a panel of travel experts which country everyone should visit at least once in their lives.<\/p>\n

Many Brits like to head to Spain for sunny holidays, while Paris is considered a perfect city break destination. Neither was selected as the top pick by the experts, however.<\/p>\n

Portugal, Greece and Italy were the most highly ranked countries to visit. The experts gave their reasoning for their decisions, which ranged from history, culture and food.<\/p>\n

Showing support to Portugal as the top European destination, <\/a>Joanne Lynn, travel expert at cruise and tour operator Riviera Travel,<\/a> said: “It offers an impressive mix of history, scenery and culture, but what really makes it stand out is the contrast between its regions, particularly beyond the well-known Algarve.<\/p>\n

“While the Algarve is popular for its beaches and warm climate, the Douro Valley<\/a> provides a completely different experience. This is a quieter, more traditional side of Portugal, where travel is centred around the river and the surrounding vineyard landscapes.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s less about resort-style relaxation and more about taking your time and enjoying the setting.”<\/p>\n

Tourists can travel through vineyards<\/a> and take in the countryside views. There is a chance to sample Portugal’s renowned wine and port.<\/p>\n

Joanne added: “These experiences feel far more personal and rooted in place than what many travellers might be used to in busier destinations.<\/p>\n

\u201cOverall, it\u2019s this contrast that makes Portugal stand out. The Algarve offers ease and familiarity, while the Douro Valley provides a quieter, more authentic perspective, shaped by landscape, tradition and local culture. Experiencing both highlights just how varied the country is, and why it leaves such a lasting impression on those who visit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, InteleTravel<\/a> UK & Ireland Managing Director, Tricia Handley-Hughes selected Greece <\/a>as “an absolute essential” for any bucket-list.<\/p>\n

She said: “What makes it so special is the diversity – you can stand in the shadow of the Parthenon one morning and be in a quiet cove by sunset. It also offers a sense of authentic hospitality that is increasingly hard to find.”<\/p>\n

“Whether you are island-hopping or exploring ancient ruins, the experience is truly humbling.”<\/p>\n

Tricia explained that accommodation across Greece can range from traditional self-catering apartments to high-quality hotels.<\/p>\n

A final contender is Italy. For Tim Hentschel, CEO & Co-founder of HotelPlanner.com<\/a>, he says it “effortlessly” combines history, culture and lifestyle in a single trip.<\/a><\/p>\n

He said: “Travellers can experience the depth of Rome, the artistry of Florence, and the relaxed coastal pace <\/a>of the Amalfi Coast, all without feeling too rushed.<\/p>\n

“For me, Puglia in Italy, with its whitewashed towns, Adriatic coastline and exceptional local cuisine, delivers an authentic summer experience without the intensity and crowds of other Italian hotspots.
