Met Police detectives are reportedly seeking to bring UK charges against sex offender Christian Brueckner over the abduction and murder of Madeleine McCann. <\/p>\n
But the German constitution prevents the extradition of its citizens to non-EU countries, which could lead Berlin to reject the request.<\/p>\n
Why Brexit could stop Brueckner from\u00a0being tried in Britain<\/p>\n
Detectives are reportedly trying to bring the Madeleine McCann\u00a0suspect to the UK for trial \u2013 but a Brexit-related rule could stop it.<\/p>\n
Since 2021, Britain and Germany have had a\u00a0reciprocal extradition pact under the EU\u2013UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement.<\/p>\n
But under Article 16 of the German constitution, no citizen can be extradited to a non-EU country.<\/p>\n
Before Brexit, Brueckner could have been extradited to the UK without issue.<\/p>\n
Germany is one of 10 EU countries that has imposed a \u2018nationality bar\u2019, which blocks\u00a0extradition of its own citizens.<\/p>\n

Madeleine was three years old when she went missing from a resort in Portugal in 2007. Christian Brueckner was living a mile away.<\/p>\n
He was named by British police as a prime suspect while serving a prison sentence in Germany for rape, but denies involvement in Madeline\u2019s disappearance.<\/p>\n
\t Explained<\/p>\n 4 min read<\/p>\n \nWhat are the options?\n<\/p>\n One option could be for Brueckner to be extradited from Germany to Portugal, where he could either be prosecuted or extradited to the UK. He could still be extradited to the UK if he left Germany. <\/p>\n The lead German prosecutor, Hans Christian Wolters, said the investigation is ongoing, but there are no plans for further searches in Portugal or elsewhere. <\/p>\n WORLD<\/p>\n The European nation being torn apart by migrant amnesty<\/p>\n People queued overnight outside the embassy of The Gambia in Madrid to get legal documents under Spain\u2019s migration amnesty programme. <\/p>\n But when they were told no appointments were available, some clambered over the wall in chaotic scenes that went viral. <\/p>\n \nWhat\u2019s the latest?\n<\/p>\n Anxiety over Spain\u2019s divisive immigration scheme<\/p>\n Many migrants travelled from across Spain and paid \u20ac120 (\u00a3104) each to get legal documents.<\/p>\n The scheme, which runs until the end of June,\u00a0offers undocumented migrants a one-year legal resident permit.<\/p>\n The Gambian embassy incident\u00a0prompted renewed criticism of\u00a0the left-wing government\u2019s scheme.<\/p>\n It highlighted pressures on officials dealing with a huge number of cases in a short period of time. <\/p>\n \nDo Spaniards support the scheme?\n<\/p>\n The latest poll shows\u2026<\/p>\n 52% for, 48% against<\/p>\n The scheme is expected to grant at least 500,000 migrants legal status, although police have predicted that more than one million could take advantage of it. <\/p>\n \t WORLD<\/p>\n 4 min read<\/p>\n Spain chooses \u2018dignity, community and justice\u2019 <\/p>\n Some say we have gone too far, that we are going against the current. When did empathy become something exceptional?<\/p>\n SPANISH PRIME MINISTER, PEDRO S\u00c1NCHEZ<\/p>\n HEALTH<\/p>\n The inflatable \u2018gentle\u2019 forceps for childbirth<\/p>\n More than 300 babies have been born with inflatable forceps, the first breakthrough in childbirth assistance in decades. <\/p>\n It is hoped that the device, called the OdonAssist, could reduce birth trauma. It will be rolled out to 40 hospitals across Britain and Europe.<\/p>\n How new forceps could revolutionise childbirth<\/p>\n Around one in eight people will have an assisted vaginal birth using forceps or vacuum extraction. <\/p>\n Women may have bleeding or tears and marks can be left on the baby.<\/p>\n Inflatable forceps work by surrounding the baby\u2019s head with a soft air cuff, allowing doctors to help remove it more gently. <\/p>\n In trials, patients reported no or low pain in more than 95 per cent of births where OdonAssist was used.<\/p>\n \t Analysis<\/p>\n 5 min read<\/p>\n How \u2018gentle\u2019 forceps were invented<\/p>\n From a prototype using a jar and a doll to development by the World Health Organisation (WHO). <\/p>\n The OdonAssist was thought up by a mechanic in Argentina in 2006 called Jorge Od\u00f3n. <\/p>\n He created the first prototype using a jar, a cloth and his daughter\u2019s doll.<\/p>\n It was then taken up by Mario Merialdi, of the WHO, who refined the idea for clinical use.\u00a0<\/p>\n It was\u00a0created by Maternal Newborn Health Innovations, a public benefit corporation to help reduce avoidable pain. <\/p>\n FASHION<\/p>\n The best looks at this year\u2019s Met Gala<\/p>\n Celebrities took to the red carpet to show off their outfits for this year\u2019s Met Gala theme: costume art.
