At the time of the theft, Bras was working for the Spain-based global financial institution as a &#8220;relationship manager&#8221; just over the state line at a Seekonk, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/category\/fox-news-massachusetts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Massachusetts<\/a>, branch.<\/p>\n<p>In his role, Bras assisted patrons with their accounts and had access to sensitive customer data, including the account of a 78-year-old man identified only as &#8220;MDR,&#8221; who was residing in an assisted living facility in Milton, Massachusetts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Federal prosecutors said Bras impersonated the man over the phone and online to obtain checks and a debit card for the account.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/economy\/jpmorgan-chase-launches-american-dream-initiative-expand-small-business-support-across-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">JPMORGAN CHASE LAUNCHES AMERICAN DREAM INITIATIVE TO EXPAND SMALL BUSINESS SUPPORT ACROSS US<\/a><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/santander-bank-building.jpg\" alt=\"The Santander bank is seen on the facade of the corporate building\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>A former Santander Bank employee in Rhode Island has pleaded guilty in federal court to charges. (Henry Romero\/Reuters, File \/ Reuters)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The object of the scheme <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/category\/fox-news-crime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">to defraud<\/a> was for Bras to unlawfully enrich himself by using his access to Victim #1\u2019s account to issue checks, conduct bank transfers, send wires, and make debit card purchases for himself,&#8221; court documents state.<\/p>\n<p>Bras\u2019 activity was flagged by Santander\u2019s internal fraud detection unit, which contacted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/category\/fox-news-police-and-law-enforcement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Seekonk Police Department<\/a>, sparking an investigation that also involved the U.S. Secret Service.<\/p>\n<p>Bras allegedly accessed the victim&#8217;s account approximately 88 times between April and July 2023. To conceal his activity, authorities said he used a TracFone \u2014 a prepaid wireless service often used to obscure identity \u2014 to check the status of illegal money transfers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/politics\/trump-admins-operation-epic-fury-takes-aim-banks-handling-iranian-money\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">TRUMP ADMIN&#8217;S OPERATION EPIC FURY TAKES AIM AT BANKS HANDLING IRANIAN MONEY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/santander-bank-building-002.jpg\" alt=\"A Santander bank building at night.\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>A former Santander employee in Rhode Island admitted to stealing more than $125,000 from an elderly client with dementia, federal prosecutors said.\u00a0 (Kacper Pempel\/Reuters, File \/ Reuters)<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors allege Bras purchased a 2023 KIA Sportage with the stolen money and fabricated a contract to make it appear that MDR was buying land from Bras\u2019 wife.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When questioned by an internal bank investigator, Bras claimed his wife was a real estate agent in Portugal, and that the wires were part of a property transaction. Authorities say he sent at least 10 wire transfers totaling $9,690 via Western Union to accounts in Portugal; Bras personally received nine of those transfers.<\/p>\n<p>When confronted, Bras repeatedly changed his story, initially claiming he did not know MDR, and then later claiming MDR was &#8220;upset&#8221; and had asked Bras to receive checks at his personal residence.<\/p>\n<p>Ticker Security Last Change Change % <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/quote?stockTicker=SAN\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SAN<\/a> BANCO SANTANDER SA 12.40 +0.52<br \/>\n        +4.38%<\/p>\n<p>The bank eventually terminated Bras in July 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A Santander spokesperson told FOX Business that Santander Bank had proactively brought the matter to law enforcement\u2019s attention and worked with the customer to resolve the issue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Santander Bank\u2019s highest priority is protecting our customers and their accounts,&#8221; the bank said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/spain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Justice-Department-seal-podium-logo.jpg\" alt=\"Justice Department seal\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Federal prosecutors said Bras impersonated the man over the phone and online to obtain checks and a debit card for the account. (Samuel Corum\/Bloomberg via Getty Images \/ Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Bras&#8217; attorney, Kensley Barrett, told FOX Business that Bras has &#8220;accepted responsibility for his actions and is remorseful\u00a0for what led to this regrettable situation, including the impact on those negatively affected.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He is committed to atoning for his actions and ensuring this mistake doesn&#8217;t define him,&#8221; Barrett said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Under the terms of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/category\/fox-news-crime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">plea deal<\/a>, Bras must forfeit $126,000 to the federal government.
