May 6 (Reuters) – Chinese automaker Geely has purchased part of a Ford factory in Spain and plans \u200cto build one of its models there, Spanish \u200ctrade publication La Tribuna de Automocion reported, citing unnamed sector sources.<\/p>\n
Geely, China’s \u200bsecond-largest automaker after BYD, is in the midst of wider negotiations first reported by Reuters in February for shared vehicle technologies.<\/p>\n
Geely did not immediately respond to requests for comment \u200con the report \u2060published on Tuesday. A Ford representative called the news speculation and declined to comment.<\/p>\n
Geely is \u2060one of many Chinese automakers moving to set up production in Europe to skirt tariffs and increasingly strict regulations on \u200bimporting foreign-made \u200bcars.<\/p>\n
The company has agreed \u200bto purchase the Body 3 \u200cvehicle assembly facilities at the Almussafes plant in Valencia, La Tribuna de Automocion reported, adding that the automakers were also considering having Geely build a model for Ford.<\/p>\n
The same publication reported on Wednesday that Chinese automaker SAIC \u200cMotor was considering a site in \u200bthe northwestern Spanish port town of \u200bFerrol, in Galicia, \u200bfor production in Europe, citing unnamed sources familiar \u200cwith negotiations.<\/p>\n
The Galician government did \u200bnot immediately \u200breply to a request for comment.<\/p>\n
In April, Galician Premier Alfonso Rueda visited SAIC Motor’s headquarters in Zhengzhou on \u200ba trip intended \u200cto attract investment from China to the region.<\/p>\n
