AP<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/08\/us-news\/quarantined-cruise-passengers-sip-coffee-watch-soccer-as-health-workers-watch-for-symptoms-of-hantavirus\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MV Hondius<\/a> is estimated to arrive near the port of Granadilla, on the island of Tenerife, \u201cin the early hours of Sunday,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanwide-expeditions.com\/press\/press-update-m-v-hondius-8-may-2026-19-00-hrs-cet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">latest update from Oceanwide Expeditions<\/a> Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>A team of epidemiologists and medical professionals deployed by the Centers for Disease Control is en route to Spain, to escort the 17 Americans on board the ship \u2014 as are health officials from across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>Altogether they will repatriate 147 passengers and 60 crew members to 24 different countries, according to the latest numbers released by the crew. The 14 Spaniards on board will be evacuated by military plane and taken to Madrid to quarantine.<\/p>\n<p>The US Department of State is chartering a government medical repatriation flight that will bring the 17 American passengers to the Air Force One Base in Omaha, Nebraska.<\/p>\n<p>From there, they will be transported to the National Quarantine Center at the University of Nebraska, where another CDC team is being deployed.<\/p>\n<p>Medical workers awaited the passengers from the MV Hondius Friday. University of Nebraska Medical Center<\/p>\n<p>The CDC has not said how long the passengers will have to isolate before returning home. It\u2019s also not known what states they are from. The incubation period for the hantavirus averages one to three weeks \u2014 but in rare cases can go <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/05\/world-news\/health-experts-suggest-mv-hondius-passengers-quarantine-for-up-to-8-weeks-and-share-whats-next-in-hantavirus-outbreak\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">up to eight weeks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Three people have died, including Dutch ornithologists <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/09\/world-news\/hantavirus-patient-zero-was-dutch-ornithologist-leo-schilperoord\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leo and Mirjam Schilperoord<\/a> and a German passenger, and at least five more have fallen sick.
