TENERIFE, Spain (AP) \u2014 The cruise ship at the center of a hantavirus outbreak<\/a> arrived off Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands, where the passengers and some of the crew will begin disembarking on Sunday, officials said.<\/p>\n

Nobody among more than 140 people on board the MV Hondius is showing symptoms of the virus<\/a>, Spanish authorities, the World Health Organization and cruise company Oceanwide Expeditions said. Three people have died since the outbreak, and five passengers who left the ship are infected with hantavirus<\/a>, which can cause life-threatening illness.<\/p>\n

The ship won’t dock but will remain anchored, with people ferried off in small boats. Everyone disembarking will be checked for symptoms, and will only be taken off the ship once evacuation flights are ready to fly them to their destinations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe entire operation is proceeding normally,\u201d Spanish Health Minister M\u00f3nica Garc\u00eda said.<\/p>\n

Authorities are aiming to complete the evacuation flights between Sunday and Monday, Spanish authorities and WHO said.<\/p>\n

There are people of more than 20 different nationalities on board.<\/p>\n

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, along with Spain\u2019s health and interior ministers, will supervise the operation in Tenerife, the largest of Spain\u2019s Canary Islands off the coast of West Africa. Authorities have said the passengers and crew members who will disembark will have no contact with the local population.<\/p>\n

Hantavirus usually spreads when people inhale contaminated residue<\/a> of rodent droppings and isn\u2019t easily transmitted between people. But the Andes virus<\/a> detected in the cruise ship outbreak may be able to spread between people in rare cases. Symptoms usually show between one and eight weeks after exposure.<\/p>\n

The Spanish nationals on board will be the first to disembark, Garc\u00eda said, and will be transferred to a medical facility and quarantined. Oceanwide has listed 13 Spanish passengers and one Spanish crew member on board.<\/p>\n

Some Spanish passengers aboard the ship told The Associated Press that they\u2019re concerned about being stigmatized<\/a> once back on shore.<\/p>\n

And some on Tenerife are worried.<\/p>\n

\u201cI tell you, I don\u2019t like this very much,\u201d said 69-year-old resident Simon Vidal. \u201cAnyone can say what they want. Why did they have to bring a boat from another country here? Why not anywhere else, why bring it to the Canary Islands?\u201d<\/p>\n

Both the U.S. and the U.K. have agreed to send planes to evacuate their citizens. Americans on board will be quarantined at a medical center in Nebraska.<\/p>\n

Australia is sending a plane expected to arrive Monday to evacuate its nationals and those from nearby countries like New Zealand, Garc\u00eda said. Its plane will be the last to leave Tenerife, she said.<\/p>\n

Those disembarking will leave behind their luggage, and will be allowed to take only a small bag with essential items, a cellphone, charger and documentation.<\/p>\n

Some crew, as well as the body of a passenger who died on board, will remain on the ship, which will sail on to the Netherlands where it will undergo disinfection, Spanish authorities said.<\/p>\n
